May we, like Mary, spare nothing when it comes to pouring out our affection on Jesus. 🏺It’s interesting that of all the Gospels that tell of this moment when Jesus is anointed with perfume (see also Matthew 26:6–13, Luke 7:37-38, John 12:3-8), only Mark mentions that Mary breaks the alabaster jar (or box, in some older translations).Nothing is spared. And everything is given unto Him.This is a big deal on so many levels.❗️She had prepared it beforehand. This wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision. She made plans to attend Simon the Leper’s home, and give a complete offering of her deep devotion to Jesus.❗️It was a significant amount of perfume oil; both volume and worth. John 12 indicates it was a pint (almost 500ml for my metric, friends!) and worth 300 denarii–a year’s wages, due to its scarcity.❗️Many scholars believe that this kind of perfume–pure, expensive spikenard–is one that would have been passed down through her family as an heirloom. In other words, it was her most valuable earthly possession.But Mary isn’t counting the cost of her possessions. Nor the impact on her future.Giving everything that she has to Jesus is her only consideration.And she pours it on the head of her King–for this was the practice of the prophets long before (like Moses and Samuel), who anointed the High Priest and Kings of Israel, respectively, with oil upon their heads.May we do the “beautiful thing” (v. 6) unto Jesus. May we hold nothing back–not one single drop–of our fragrant offering of praise, worship, affection, adoration and devotion.For He is worthy of it all!✍️A further prompt to explore: what would it look like for you to pour out your love for Jesus today, holding nothing back?
